Douglas Murray talk
On Thursday 30th October, controversial conservative writer Douglas Murray spoke to the Secular Society at the University of Nottingham.
As a big admirer of Douglas Murray, I went along to his talk. Although I shall not venture into the ‘ins and outs’ of Murray’s speech, I shall say this: I believe that Douglas Murray says what the majority of the British public believe (apart from the vocal-left), yet are sometimes afraid to voice for fear of reprimanding- something that should not happen due to our basic liberty of freedom of speech. However, what was most disturbing was the various examples Mr Murray gave us of people merely voicing their opinions and being attacked and even killed for these words.
He made the important point that we should be very careful of letting a select minority dictate what we are and are not allowed to think and know.
He also made the interesting point that in Britain “the Right” (of the political spectrum) is always treated with suspicion and accusations of racism, whereas “the Left” gets away very lightly, despite its history in relation to Stalinism and Marxism.
I would highly recommend Douglas Murray to any Conservative Association across the country as he is an intelligent and thought provoking speaker and writer.
